First off, HAPPY NEW YEARS! Alright, you’re new to fixed gears, or just new to bikes in general, what tools and equipment should I have at home so that I can make the necessary adjustments, tweaks and regular maintenance for my ride? Well, lets do this in a list so it looks neater on your computer screen.
1. Tire pump. Very important, how can you ride if you don’t have air in those tires. Depending on the size of your bag or how you prefer to ride, you can easily take one with you for emergencies. Popping a tire is one of the worst things ever…if you don’t carry one with you, at least have one at home so you don’t have to depend on other people…borrowing tools sucks.
2. 5/8 or an adjustable wrench. This is important if you don’t have quick release wheels, which I enjoy…way easier to get my bike in cars. If you don’t have quick release, carry around a wrench so you can always take off the wheels if necessary.
3. Allen wrenches. It is always great to have a complete set of multi sized allen wrenches. You never know when you will need them for headset or stem problems. and MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CORRECT SIZE. Don’t strip those things…thats why you need a complete set.
and while you’re at it, you might as well get these too.
Chainbreak
Flathead screwdriver
Crank puller
Tire levers
Doesn’t hurt to have a bike stand to work on the bike with either.
