Flip Flop Hubs.

Well, what is a flip-flop hub?  Kind of a goofy sounding name, but its actually a pretty sick feature that some bikes come with which gives you a bit of versatility with choosing your riding preference on your bike.  Basically, a flip-flop is a double sided hub.  These are rear bicycle hubs that are threaded so that they can accept sprockets, or more popularly known as cogs, on both sides of the wheel.  This way, you can have your fixed gear cog on one side of the wheel and a freewheel on the other side.  This will allow you to change from riding a fixed gear to a normal free wheel ride, where you don’t have to keep your legs in constant motion…all you have to do is flip the rear wheel…hence the name flip flop hub…genius idea.  This really comes in handy if, for example, you use your bicycle as a primary means for transportation.  Lets say you ride your bike to and from work everyday…you prefer riding fixed for the added exercise and health benefits that come from this practice, but you had a hard day and just want to take it easy and coast a good portion of the ride home…well, all you have to do is FLIP FLOP and you are good to go.  However, if you are going to do this, you most definitely should have a front brake for when you ride free wheel.  While in fixed mode, you can slow yourself down with your legs…but if flipped it, you have no brakes at all.  So, go ahead and throw a front brake on there anyways…trust me, its a good idea regardless.  Check out some of these flip flop hubs for sale or auction available on eBay below.

    Hi there,

Just a quick question as to the flip flob hubs, i’m working on building my own fixie at present, and I was just wondering with the flip flop hub how does one change the wheel around with the tension of the chain being as tight as possible.

Or would you simply have the hub sitting further back on the rear cog to allow movement forward to release the chain.

Also, with there being no derailer, and chain tension being important and having to be set manually, how would one know where to set the hub to make sure that then chain is at the correct tension.

    Cheers.

to change wheel around, first loosen hub bolts then separate the chain from the cog…then flip the wheel and put the chain back on the cog.

now, to create the correct tension, pull back on the rear wheel and first tighten the bolt on the left side of the hub (the non drive side)…this will create tension in the chain…it might look a little crooked while doing it but thats fine for now…then just center the rear wheel by pulling back on the right side…the chain should yield to your finger about half an inch…thats the correct amount of tension.

you don’t want too much bc that can will out your chain faster.
