Top 5 Reasons to Ride Fixed!

Submitted by John on July 15, 2009 – 4:17 pmNo Comment

Greetings people, today I was thinking...why the hell do you ride a fixed gear bike?  I know why I ride a fixed gear bike, and I will express that through a Top 5 list I have carefully constructed.

1. Fixies are an excellent source of exercise!  Riding a fixie is much more strenuous than a normal bike ride, obviously...there is no coasting, you are working the whole time you are riding.

2. Speed!  I love to go fast, and I can go way faster on my fixed gear than I have managed to go on any other bike...constantly pedaling can get you going pretty fast in no time at all.

3. Control.  This is where a lot of people may argue...there is a huge controversy that fixed gears are a danger because many people choose to ride without brakes and because of this, people commonly think that riders are not in full control of their bike.  However, I feel way more in control of my bike when I am riding without brakes...I must rely on my legs to control my speed.  This also causes one to feel more in tune with their bike...it becomes a part of you more so than a normal geared bike.

4. Simplicity.  I just love the simplicity of a fixed gear bike...it is the oldest form of a bicycle and I think that is really neat.  Simple is good...things get weird the more complicated they get.

5. Tricks.  Being that I come from a BMX and Skateboarding background, I definitely love the trick aspect of fixed gear riding.  The unique setup and modification possibilities make a lot of things possible on a fixed gear...things that are not feasible on other bikes.

That is my top 5 reasons for riding a fixed gear bike, you should leave a comment with your top 5 reasons for riding a fixed...I'd love to hear from some of you guys...feel free to email me at jay.santos86@yahoo.com
