1.  simplicity.  Fixed gear bikes are known for their simplicity.  This style of bike leaves off many of the non-essential parts that a normal bicycle might include, for instance, gears.  Fixed gear bikes are single speed, which means only one gear.  Your chain isn’t going to grind and make weird ass noises as you change gears.  A lot of riders also choose to ride without brakes…some see it as unnecessary, others see it as a dumb risk…whatever your opinion is on breaks, fixed gears get rid of a lot of added weight most bikes have.

2.  it’s a trend.  The popularity of fixed gear bikes should also be contributed to the simple fact that they are in fashion…they are popular right now, which makes everyone want them.  Thats just how trends work i suppose, but they’re still badass and will continue to be badass even after the flame has died out.  Other reasons for the surge of popularity among fixed gear bikes is the price.  Depending on how you talk to and where you look, fixed gear bikes can be expensive or cheap…it depends on a number of options including brand names and style, but the whole idea of fixed gear riding is a relatively cheap hobby..think about it, it is the simplest form of cycling.  Check out some of these excellent deals on fixed gear bikes on eBay below;

1.  Customization.  People can do whatever they want with fixed gear bikes…there are so few parts to these bikes that customization is relatively simple!  Look at the streets of New York City…they are jumpin with crazy colors and styles of fixed gears.  Most people tend to customize the wheels and rims, the frames and handlebars.

2.  The Subculture.  As mainstream as people want to say fixed gear bikes have gone, it is still a subculture full of people that others find interesting.  People always want to emulate what looks attractive to them, and to many people the idea of bike messengers, low maintenance and simplicity is an enticing idea.

The last style of handlebars for fixed gear bikes we are going to talk about are track drop handlebars, or drop handlebars.  This style of handlebar may have a shallow or deep drop…I see these kinds of handlebars a lot but they are actually pretty uncomfortable unless you are really accustomed to this style…takes some getting used to for sure.

]]> http://www.buyafixie.com/08/mikes-bikes-how-to-cut-the-steer-tube-on-your-fork/feed/ 0 Installing Directional Half Link Chains http://www.buyafixie.com/11/installing-directional-half-link-chains/ http://www.buyafixie.com/11/installing-directional-half-link-chains/#comments Sat, 13 Nov 2010 20:29:17 +0000 John http://www.buyafixie.com/?p=2910 As I was checking around for new cycling news, I came across a very helpful tip on the EighthInch blog.  They were giving a product rundown on their new half link chains and brought up a very important point when it comes to bike chains…half link chains are directional, meaning they go on a certain way.  They made a little photo comparison so you can see the proper way to put on a directional half link chain.  What is the advantage of half link chains?  Well, unlike standard chains, which let you adjust the length every 2 links, these chains let you adjust the length by each link…this will give you a more adjustable chain, allowing you to have more precise control over the setup of your bike.  Half link chains are also much tougher and can handle much more abuse from freestyle riding than a standard bike chain…the outward angling of the links help to spread any impact you might encounter in trick track…check out the little comparison below that EighthInch created.

1.  It is simple.  This is a bicycle in its simplest form.  There is no worrying about gears or other unnecessary parts…a fixed gear bike is just plain simple.

2.  It is Strong.  Because a fixed gear is so simple, there is much less that can go wrong with it.  Because of it’s simplicity, it is durable and much less exposed to the dangers and complications of other types of bicycles.

3.  It is Maintenance free.  Once again, going back to the simplicity of this contraption.  Fixed gear bikes require a lot less maintenance and work.  Most work you see people do on fixed gears is purely cosmetic.

4.  It is Peaceful.  Fixed gear bikes are much more peaceful and enjoyable to ride…there is something about it that makes you feel much more in tune with your surroundings and your bike.  Because you are constantly pedaling, you feel like you are a part of the bike…feeling every turn and new terrain.
