Premium Rush…good for cycling?

So by now I am sure you all have heard of Premium Rush, the movie starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt where he is a bike messenger in NYC. In the movie he rides a fixed gear and the movie pretty much forces fixed gears down your throat in an attempt to grab mainstream America’s attention on this cool new trend. Well i read this article that poses an interesting question: is this movie dangerous for cyclists in major metropolitan areas like New York? Does the movie encourage riders to ride dangerously through traffic? splitting lanes and running red lights? Just like everything in life, it is only as dangerous as you make it.

If you want to ride like an asshole and be that guy, then you are definitely increasing your chances of getting messed up…but does the movie encourage it? I don’t think so…it’s a movie…it’s not real…and in real life, one guy on a fixed gear bike is not going to take down an entire crime organization by doing wheelies and skids…it might look cool, but its not real and i think people know it.

SE Bikes Soda Pop

From everything I have been seeing from people who are at Interbike, the Soda Pop fixed gear bikes from SE has been a real hit…it just looks so neat and cool, a cute little trick track bike for all the little groms out there. The 20″ has a coaster brake to keep things simple and safe, while the 24″ is a bit taller and has a freewheel and handbrakes…so it looks like a fixie but no fixed cog…honestly just ride a bmx bike at this point right?

SE Bikes Draft Coaster 2012

Check out one of the sickest releases from the 2012 line from SE Bikes, the Draft Coaster…this bike is so cool because it’s got an old school coaster brake, remember how fun that used to be? You used to be able to do way cooler skids where you whip around and put your foot down and looks super duper cool in front of the middle school babes…yeahhh.

This bike is the same hi-ten steel draft frame and fork as the fixed gear model, and retailing at a solid $330…very nice.

Cyclist Killed by Cement Truck in NYC

The intersections in NYC are some of the most dangerous places to go through in the country…last night that proved to be the case again. A cyclist was killed on Delancey Street between Chrystie and Bowery after falling underneath the rear wheels of a cement truck. Witnesses said the cyclist “seemed nervous” and lost control of his bike, which caused him to fall between the truck’s massive wheels. According to the police, the victim was wearing a helmet but faltered on his bike because his chain fell off the sprocket….pronounced dead at the scene…very tragic stuff.

This marks the 5th cycling fatality in less than 60 days. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer went on to tweet shortly after the accident, “No more waiting: DOT must fix this dangerous mess and save lives now.” check here for more information.
