Squats

This fixed-bike workout will help you slow the hell down — pure and simple. At the most there is only a front wheel brake, but more often than not your fixie is not going to have brakes at all. The latter format of a fixed-gear bike is the hippest and without question the most dangerous. In either case, the only braking power comes from your body slowing the machine down. This is done using your quads and calves, which is why squats are so important.

How to perform this fixed-gear bike workout: Stand completely straight with your feet pointed forward and hip-width apart. While keeping your torso straight, slowly bend your knees and begin to lower your hips as if you were sitting down on an invisible chair behind you. Don’t let your knees go beyond your toes, and do not bend lower than 90 degrees. If your hamstrings are tight, you might want to consider starting your squat routine with a Swiss ball, up against a wall. Roll down the wall with your back resting against the ball lightly. If you want to increase your strength, try adding weight to your squat with a barbell. Without weight, aim for 3 sets of 10-12 reps. With weights aim for 4 sets of 5-6 reps. Squats work out your quads, hamstrings and calves together, which is an ideal fixed-gear bike workout.

1. Measure your inseam while barefoot. Stand against a wall and put a book between your legs so that it is pressed right up against your pelvic bone. Make a mark with a pencil on the wall along the top of the book and then measure the distance from the floor to the mark in centimeters.
2. Use your inseam measurement to get a rough idea of the frame size you will need. Do this by multiplying your inseam by .65. This will give you a good estimate of the bike size measured center to center. For example, if your inseam is 86cm, you will fit a 56cm frame (86 x .65 = 55.9). If you are looking at bikes measured center to top, multiply by .67.
3. Once you have the size figured out, test out some bikes that are that size to determine which is most comfortable to you.

1)  If it is your first time on a fixed gear, USE A FRONT BRAKE.  I guarantee you, you will not skid stop your very first time on a fixed gear…you must learn how, so in the mean time…put on a front brake for a little protection.

2)  Make sure you know what you are doing before you start zooming down hills at ridiculous speeds…you definitely want to be strapped or clipped in when you are hitting 150 rpm down hill.  It is not fun to be flying down a hill, have your feet fly off and avoid getting murdered by out of control, spinning cranks….keep your feet strapped down to the pedals, it is much easier.

3)  Be aware of your surroundings…on a fixed gear you have to be much more reactive to your environment…you must anticipate certain things because you will not have time to react as fast or be able to pull off certain maneuvers you would be able to on a freewheel…things like, hopping up curbs are much different on a fixie and should be practiced as such…sometimes hopping up a curb is your only way to avoid an accident so you gotta be prepared and anticipate junk like that.

]]> http://www.buyafixie.com/06/fixed-gear-toe-clips/feed/ 0 Need a new Fixed Gear Wheelset? http://www.buyafixie.com/05/need-fixed-gear-wheelset/ http://www.buyafixie.com/05/need-fixed-gear-wheelset/#comments Thu, 28 May 2009 17:12:01 +0000 John http://www.buyafixie.com/?p=366 You probably do.  Alright, it’s warm outside (at least where I am) and that means more riding, especially night time riding.  Typically if you are riding more, you are doing more damage to your wheels, especially the rear wheel if you are riding brakeless like many fixed gear riders these days.  Fixed Gear skidding definitely takes its toll on your wheels.  You can always try to do those hop skids and try to wear down different areas of your tire instead of always skidding on the same place on your tire, but that isn’t going to extend the life of the wheel that much more.  Nothing sucks more than to be out on a long, enjoyable ride only to have your rear wheel blow out five miles from home and then have it start raining on you (oh I have been there).  Good thing you have friends you can depend on to come pick you up, or bring you a new tube.  Anyways, check out the following compiled list of fixed gear wheelsets available for sale through eBay Auctions…you can find some really great deals on some pretty choice wheelsets.  You can also check out other fixed gear wheelsets through the link that might help you out too.  Have a nice day!
