During my daily rounds of all things fixed gear on the world wide web, I came across another standard "fixed gear bikes are popular" article, courtesy of The Daily Titan, the Cal State Fullerton newspaper. Nothing ground breaking in this one, but if you live in the area you might enjoy the read.

Check out this new Eighth-Inch Scrambler V2 Complete fixed gear bike...this thing is pretty cool. These things also come in black, but the white definitely looks pretty sick. This particular bike is made from 4130 chromoly steel and accepts 700c sized wheels. I could go on and tell you all about the specs on this bike or you could just click on one of the auctions below and check it out...nah I'll just go ahead and tell you. This bike is already drilled to take front and rear brakes...gotta have those if you are riding a bike in Idaho...so don't worry about drilling holes for this mug. This bike is also drilled to take 2 full sized water bottles. The wheels are also pretty sick on this bike...the bearing hubs come in silver, black, gold, white, blue, red, lime green, or brown. New Bike Rules in Idaho

I recently came across an article from the Idaho Reporter all about some proposed new bicycle laws and they are pretty kooky. As usual, when the city or state comes out with a new law, chances are it's going to be pretty lame...this is no different. This law is all about passing cyclists, holding up traffic and assault/threats towards cyclists...that doesn't sound too bad, especially the last part, but it definitely does not work in favor of cyclists. Basically, the law says that drivers must leave at least 3 feet between their passing car and the cyclist...called the three-feet-to-pass rule...however, this law will probably not be enforced. The law also states that if driver or cyclists is holding up more than 3 cars behind them, then they must pull over and allow traffic to pass, or the cyclists or driver could face a $75 fine. Another section to this law states that any threat made to a cyclist for slowing down a driver will be treated as a misdemeanor...also punishable by a $75 fine. So that means that drivers can threaten and swerve at cyclists (pretty much assault with a deadly weapon) and only face a $75 fine...cool. And it gets even better...the proposed law would require all bikes to have working brakes...even though fixies can stop just as effectively as any other bike with brakes. Los Angeles has always been known for its horrendous traffic at all hours of the day and as a means to relieve pressure, some cyclists have come up with various alternatives. One such proposed idea is the Backbone Bikeway Network; This network would create miles long corridors both east to west and north to south for cyclists along some of the most heavily frequented routes. Bicycle freeways seems to be the answer for both cyclists and drivers alike. This plan would accommodate cyclists and their safety while keeping a smooth flow of traffic for motorists without being stuck behind bicycle traffic. There are many mixed opinions on this issue...check out both sides of the argument in the full article here.

Espresso Cycles in Spot Magazine

Check out this photo from a recent issue of Spot Magazine in Mexico City. This issue features a little article on Espresso Cycles along with some very nice photos of some very nice bikes. It appears like things are looking pretty good South of the border for fixed gear riders.

Fixed: Global Fixed-Gear Bike Culture

If you haven't checked this out yet, make sure you take a look at Fixed: Global Fixed-Gear Bike Culture, a book by Andrew Edwards and Max Leonard. We've talked about this book in the past, but I recently came across a pretty good and more in depth review of the book. This reviewer argues that the book does a good job covering the history of fixed gear bikes and the fixed gear scene, but shoots some definite air-balls in other areas.
